When you're in or around water - whether it's a pool, lake, sea, river or ocean - you feel anxious. Your heart starts to beat faster, your breath gets shallow and you either start sweating or you freeze and feel like you can't move.
At first, you hid it because you felt ashamed or embarrassed but then the anxiousness started to really get to you every time you were near water. Now you're missing out on fun water days, your moods are unstable when the topic to go to the pool or beach comes up and you no longer feel like yourself in aquatic settings.
Perhaps a traumatic event happened to you while growing up:
Fell in the water and couldn't swim
Were pushed or pulled in the water unexpectedly
Swallowed water and panicked while submerged
Witnessed someone panicking while trying to get out of the water
Watched a scary movie where people drowned
This left an imprint in your mind and now you can't seem to overcome your water scare. Or none of the above happened to you, yet you get scared in the water and you don't understand why.
